| Customer Reviews: Good starting point for Access, presented in excellent way August 24, 2010 Luigi Zambetti (Milano (Italy)) I don't give a vote so low for a book just because I'm having problems downloading the source files.

it works correctly for me.
Indeed, I find that the quality of Microsoft Press books has improved a lot in recent years.
I really like the bi-colour black and blue font of the pages (maybe a TimesNewRoman font could be better), the binder very flexible and the excellent quality of the paper.
I have not found typos, and the various procedures step by step are accompanied by clear pictures and detailed explanations.
The teaching method of explain the concepts is excellent.
Why not include the practice files on a CD like they did before? August 8, 2010 Microsoft Office Specialist (Las Vegas, NV United States) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have bought the Microsoft Office Step by Step books since Office 97. The main thing that sets the Step by Step books apart from other Microsoft Office books is that each chapter has hands-on exercises to practice on your computer, which is the best way to learn. Now, for the first time, the practice files are not included on a CD. Instead, there is a link you need to go to so you can download the files. When I tried going to the link, instead of going to a Web page for the book and files, I was taken to a search screen at Microsoft, where I typed the name of the book. This didn't return anything for the book. I then sent an email to Microsoft Customer Service, explaining the problem and asking if they could send an email with the correct link to me. Instead, they responded with a general help type email with links to more search screens at Microsoft. I again tried searching for the book and again nothing came up for the book.
Even if the link to the practice files worked, I would rather have the files on a CD. I have a slow dial-up Internet connection, and I don't want to have to download files that should have come with the book. I read somewhere that the Step by Step books are now published by another company. If this is true, Microsoft should have at least directed me to them instead of sending me their impersonal reply with links to more useless search screens.
I just looked at the last edition of this book that I bought, "Access 2007 Step by Step", and it had a retail price of $24.99 and included the files on a CD. This new edition I bought has a retail price of $29.99, $5 more than the last edition and yet they couldn't afford to include a CD. Even if I get the correct link, I'm not planning to spend my money on any more books that sell at a higher price than the last editions and yet don't come with the practice files on a CD like they used to. A Step by Step book with no practice files included deserves no more than a one star rating.
